Over 30 Fife primary schools are taking part in Sustrans’ Big Walk and Wheel 2025 competition.

The annual competition, taking place from 24 March – 4 April this year, inspires pupils to make active journeys to school, improve air quality in their neighbourhood, and discover how these changes benefit their world.

Schools are ranked across the UK in 3 categories: very small school, small school, and large school. They can win accolades for their current levels of active travel to school and incentives to continue with their active travel planning and activities.

Fife schools can register to take part with Sustrans: Register — Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel 2025

Last year, our Fife winners in each category were:

  • Very Small School – Strathmiglo Primary School
  • Small School – Falkland Primary School
  • Large School – Dalgety Bay Primary School

Councillor Altany Craik, Spokesperson for Finance, Economy, and Strategic Planning, said:

“We are very excited for this year’s Big Walk and Wheel event and wish all our participating Fife schools the best of luck!

"Our staff and pupils work hard to encourage active travel to and from school, embedding healthy habits like sustainable travel into their lives at a young age. Active travel is healthier, greener and can save families money, which is why it plays a key role in our Local Transport Strategy.

“We are committed to encouraging people to take part in active travel for a healthier, greener, and more affordable lifestyle. To encourage more people to enjoy the benefits, over March and April we will also be promoting travelling actively to adults and families in Fife. From woodland walks to scenic cycle paths, active travel makes it easy to enjoy the great outdoors.”

Notes to editors

Fife Council's Local Transport Strategy 2023-2033 sets out priorities and provides a roadmap for investment and decision making on transport over the next decade. With a focus on addressing key transport issues, the plan prioritises council operations and investments, maximising grant funding and evolving technology opportunities. The vision is supported by the four priorities:

  • Fair access to daily activities
  • Safe and secure travel for all
  • A just transition to net zero
  • A resilient transport network

Active travel ambitions
The strategy prioritises walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport while acknowledging that private vehicles continue to play an important role for some trips. The council will lead on reducing Fife’s transport emissions by 56% by 2030. Active travel is an affordable, healthy, low-carbon form of transport. Half of journeys in Fife are under 3km, short enough to be walked, wheeled or cycled within 15 minutes. Despite much progress, 70% of journeys are still made by car and the council is committed to increasing the proportion of trips that are walked, wheeled or cycled to 30% by 2033.
