Glenrothes Next Generation District Heating Scheme

Next week, Fife Council’s Executive Committee will discuss the proposed district heat scheme for Glenrothes.

Councillors will be asked to approve officers proceeding with detailed design, costings and developing the final business case for this scheme.

Glenrothes Heat would supply low carbon heat to a range of business, community, public sector and domestic customers in the centre of Glenrothes.

Earlier this month a planning application was submitted to Fife Council for the construction of the heat distribution network. A consultation event will be held on Wednesday 29 March 3.30pm to 8.00pm at Rothes Halls, Glenrothes. Members of the Glenrothes Heat project team will be present to answer any questions about the scheme.

Barbara Whiting, Lead Officer for Renewables said: “Glenrothes Heat could contribute significantly to our climate change targets and could potentially reduce fuel poverty in Glenrothes households and provide cost savings for businesses.

“The consultation period will allow anyone affected by these plans to engage in the process and share their views. Anyone interested in this project is invited to attend our consultation event on 29 March.”

Notes to editors

  • Glenrothes Heat is a project to look at whether there is a technical and business case for the implementation of a district heating network in Glenrothes using the heat from the RWE’s biomass-fuelled power station. The project team for Glenrothes Heat, has been set up with representatives of Fife Council, RWE and the Scottish Government.
  • The associated Energy Centre will be subject to a separate planning application by RWE Markinch.
